A few days ago we recieved an email from our friend “viento ajetreado”, telling us about a situation that is taking place in Chile. Gold, Silver and other minerals have been discovered under two glaciers located on the mountain range Pascua-lama, on the border of Chile and Argentina. So as to exploit the site, the glaciers will be destroyed creating two enormous crators, one will be used to extract minerales, the other will be used to deposit waste created by the mining. The glaciers are essential climate stabalizers for our planet and a precious source of pure water, vital for the survival of many species and fill two rivers in the area. It is vital that these resources are not misused for the economic interest of an insignificant handful of people.
The Barrik Gold corporation is the multinacional company in charge of the project, of whom George Bush Snr is member. We are already aware of the contempt with which these corporations treat our planet, their usual “modus operandi”, is to say what is needed to quiet public outcry about possible threats that could damage the ecosystem. On their website you can actually find the response to a chain mail that is circulating on the net, stating that only 5% of the gold is actually under the ice and that the impact on the quantity of water would be minimal. Following the before mentioned modus operandi, when the corporation achieve legal loophools, the violation on our planet will begin and the company will pay out large sums of money in fines for their destructive behavior.
The Project has been given the all clear by the Chilean government, but the only reason they havent gone ahead is due to a protest by local villagers, that have been fighting for a while now and need international help to stop the project going foreward. The ministry of internal affairs censors their apperance on tv.
As stated in the chain mail, “if they destroy the glaciers not only will the source of pure water be affected, but will contaminante permanently two rivers, therefore they will never be fit for humans or animals to use, due to the use of cyanide and sulphuric acid in the extraction proccess.”
