The word schizophrenia is interesting. The word itself is made up of the Greek words schizo, which means division or split and phrenos, also Greek, meaning mind. In 1908 Bleuler renamed the conjunction of symptoms that formed the illness “dementia praecox”, term that was coined by Kraepelin in 1887, giving it the name schizophrenia. Therefore this new word is suitable for describing a situation when a person finds himself in a state of mental division... a fragmented state of mind.
Taking this into account, think about what society does in terms of living and learning. It takes things, divides them into parts so as to better understand them. To understand reality we divide it in physics, chemistry, mathematics, geometry, music, biology, history, art, etc…to understand the human body, we take it apart into head, arms, legs, organs, entrails, bones, cells, etc…this same society is divided into social status, race, ethnic origin, cities, countries, religions, etc…and how are things? Do they work in a healthy manner?
The truth is we are in a constant state of war, not only on a political level, but also on a socio-cultural, ecological and psychological level. From the hour of our tender birth in our homes, schools, universities, they teach us that we ought to choose…medicine, photography, astrology, architechture, whatever…. that we should be the best in what we choose, to then better access our place in society…what does this remind you of? A need to fight to get to grow? This guides us subconsciously into states of stress, always on your toes, fear, competition and war, all synonyms of a fragmented state of mind.
What we could say, thinking about the actual word schizophrenia, is that society, as a whole, finds itself submerged in completely schizophrenic state of mind. A state in which, to be able to prosper, we ought to be divided and not pay attention to “the voices” of our minds. Divided between our natural wisdom, that tells us what is healthy and our babilonian, ultra materialist way of living. Therefore it is normal that if one tries to think with coherence he can appear to be mad or a misfit.
So what happens to those we label as schizophrenic?
According to wikipedia, Schizophrenia “is a diagnosis that describes a group of symptoms and signs that are present in some people. They are characterised by a sustained mutation of various aspects of the psichic functioning of the individual, mainly the conscience of reality and a, more or less complex, neuropsychological disorganization, specially in the executive functions, which lead to difficulty in maintaining motivated behaviors and directed goals, and a significant social malfunction.”
What they’re telling us, simply put, is that a schizoid person has a different way of perceiving reality and using their psyche and that this, is seen as a mental disorganization problem, which produces in these people a lack of motivation and direction towards the goals in life marked by our society. But, why is a person with a different way of understanding reality and using his mind, seen as a person with a mental illness and not simply a person with a special mental attribute?
Besides, being really honest with ourselves, it should not be strange that a person can have difficulties directing themselves towards those goals or even want to rebel against them, when those goals show that the education of our culture is nothing more than a fight to be the best in a system which is totally egotistical and entertained, which doesn’t know its head form its tail. One of the basic requisites of a pyramidal system such as ours, is hiding information, so that those at the top of the pyramid have more power over those who are below. Its simple and has been happening for millenia. It’s very possible that this difficulty /rebellion for some to adapt, instead of being conscious and sane, can happen to be unconscious and sick, since, as they are missing part of the information, this people nicknamed “sick”, could not know what they are having the difficlty/rebelion for, only feeling something is’nt quite right. It’s what we call a rebel without (apparent) cause.
The truth is that at this point, we can make a link with the real meaning of the phrase ‘divide and rule’, ‘divide et impera’ from the Romans, literally meaning divide and conquer. But what did the Romans win using division? Or, what was thier agenda? They simply divided to control. It’s a way of keeping people occupied in a structure of illusion. If you maintain the worlds population in a state of fragmentation and hide some of the fragments, people will not be able to understand what life is as a ‘whole’, causing that they can be maintained in a system that goes against all natural logic, generating war, illness and death, without anyone rebelling against it... or at least not a significant number of people.
A structure embedded with a false sense of liberty behind an almost absolute control (that’s what globalization’s about, making it completely absolute) and a general desire for material comfort, makes ‘normal’ people live their lives worrying about the way the world is going, in the best of cases, but with the victimism that they can do nothing else but vote every four years, work, eat, watch football, have children, go on holiday and die... or, maybe those vacations are death? They are enclosed in a reality in which they believe that when they choose the left or right fragment at the voting booth, it will serve to contribute to bettering society, when in reality, both left and right are controlled by the same hand. Summoned in a reality in which everything is a smoke screen, a lie and information that dumbs us down, it’s not unusual that some minds, conscious or unconsciously, choose to come out of this schizophrenic state to enter a different state of mind.
And, here’s the climax of our little story... what should we call this ‘other’ state of mind? Since the state in which we come out of is collective social schizophrenia, or collective social mental division, when cannot keep calling the other state schizophrenia can we?
At this point we ought to pull out an ace from our sleeves and talk about psychotropics. These are natural substances that we find in cacti, plants, roots, flowers, etc... which cause altered states of mind which some people in our society today can find similar to the ones caused by schizophrenia. But in the past, they were plants and beverages of power, doors to access places where nature communicated with man, giving them the knowledge that made them so wise.
So who do we believe?… the delirium of someone who has no idea about what’s happening to him and whose family and friends think he’s mad? (because they don’t understand what he is going through) Or we bwlieve the wise sages of the past? That had (and have) the wisdom of what these plants are and what they were used for.
Cultures that know what energy is and how it moves through the body, the earth and the galaxy. Who used calendars connected with the nature of reality, medicines that connected the body and soul, that constructed incredible temples and lived in peace and harmony. I think the answer is something you should decide for yourself...
According to the ancients, these substances, practices (meditation / sacred gimnastics) and way of life, caused the altered state called enlightment … enlight... light…
Energy... they gave them access to where everything is the same, one, radiant, electric, charged, intelligence… the place where all information is stored, a point of infinite interconnectedness, where everything comes to know itself without the limitations of space-time. In this place there is nothing but conscience and information pouring out... an inphinite sea of light. A place in which everything is unity.
Imagine this: it’s very possible that a person who ingests a psychotropic substance, unknown to him, and which he has no information except that ‘it’s forbidden’ and that you will ‘freak out’ and, maybe, will become paranoid… when he enter’s the altered state, which according to the wise ancients, was of unity with everything and of information, he will not know what’s happening to him. He will only feel rivers of information that expand his senses, without knowing how to name what he’s feeling. He could easily say ‘the police is following me!’, but, would’nt it be normal to think that, any fear or feeling that the person senses, without having the correct way of naming it, not knowing how to clasify it (how to make it coherent) and with the law in your society putting it into the box of the “prohibited”, causes the easy projection of the phrase “I’m being followed by the police!”. We should also remember that in these ancient cultures people were trained to be able to enter in these altered states and realy understood them.
We have to, specially, take into account that there are many new schools of thought, starting to redefine our text books and, evidently, starting to proof almost all the wisdom that comes from ancient cultures of our planet. Transpersonal psychology, holodynamics, sacred geometry, unified field theory... are all theories that take us to the place where everything is made up of one only substance that moves to generate all that exists, and where any psychological problem comes from trying to adapt to a society that’s insane in it’s foundations and that’s limited in knowledge.
What we are proposing here, is the change in the word schizophrenia to invert completely it’s significance… we propose, psychophrenia. Both roots of this neologism come from the Greek languaje. Psycho, psique, derives from psyché, meaning soul, or vital inner strength connected to everything. And phrenia, deriving from phrenos, meaning mind... that is to say, the union of our mind with out internal wisdom connected to everything. This term is much more adecuate to describe the altered state which we unjustly have incarcerated under the name schizophrenia, a name which can now start to describe the majority of people on this planet, by the divided way we have to live and understand reality. We hope that we can think about this change in the near future.
As always, we encourage our readers to write us with opinions or information about things we deal with to our mail info@r-evolucio.org. It will be fascinating to start to have dialogues instead of monologs, they’re much more fun. Until next time!
